The EventStreaming.TV team have just returned from a week in Cardiff filming 360 webcast and streaming LIVE the build up to the Anthony Joshua v Carlos Takam fight.

Anthony Joshua made the fourth defence of his world heavyweight titles against Carlos Takam at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, winning the fight in the 10^th round.

Working with Deece Creative the pre-fight workout sponsored by William Hill was filmed and streamed live to 1000’s on Facebook from St David’s Hall in Cardiff. The following day EventStreaming.TV streamed the press conference from Cardiff’s national museum which also saw huge numbers tune in.

Connect with a larger audience by multicasting your event to Facebook, YouTube and Twitter (or any network) all at the same time.

Multi-destination streaming (sometimes referred to as Simulcast) allows you to webcast your event simultaneously to multiple platforms including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter using just one encoder (and of course a friendly EventStreaming.TV streaming operator).

Setting up a UK webcasting company

There are so many video companies now in Cambridge and that’s great because the demand for video has exploded.

We started out what seems like 100 years ago, making 35mm slides with a rostrum camera and tweezers. Back then only the MD would have slides – probably a new set each year with each slide costing approximately £50. That was 1996.

PowerPoint dealt a swift blow to the slide industry, so we moved into PowerPoint design, which lead onto interactive CD-ROMs and the birth on the phrase “multimedia”. This new phrase needed feeding so we started to produce affordable animation and video content.

I guess where this is all heading is that we’ve always looked to the future, especially as most of the things we used to do don’t even exist now..

CD-ROMs are now mostly used as drinks coasters in Shoreditch or bird scarers in my mums garden.

The filming side of what we do has been incredibly successful and we’re genuinely humbled by the awards and client testimonials. We’ve now filmed in over 40 countries and in many challenging locations such as Madagascar, Malawi and Lincolnshire.

We’re incredibly versatile, providing two-man crews for smaller shoots with the capacity to scale up to full film production including scriptwriters, autocue and green screen.

Animation complements our video service and since our first spinning logo for Microsoft for the launch of Windows 2000 (which lasted 5 seconds and took 2 weeks to render) we’ve moved on to create photorealistic fly-throughs for many local and national companies.

Animations help clarify and focus difficult concepts in a simple, easy to understand way. A great 40 second animation will transform pages of dull, lifeless text into a vibrant attention grabbing video.

Filming Events

We film a lot of events, award ceremonies, meetings etc. and around 2012 our clients started asking if we could stream theses events for those unable to attend, in remote locations or with crazy schedules. We initially resisted because webcasting had such a poor reputation as never quite working.

Clients kept asking, so we built our own platform.

Our goal was to offer our clients a full service webcasting experience including filming the event, vision mixing and broadcasting live. The problem was that developers wanted your first born son and the deeds to your house to create a hosting platform.

Set up in response to the crazy quotes received from other webcasting companies, we spent nearly two years developing our own technology. Our microsites have been 100% designed and created in house and we’re very proud of their success – they’ve taken almost a year to complete and have been built purely on our clients’ needs and feedback.

Our microsites are secure and fully customisable to match any corporate branding and we include many interactive features for free, for example ask a question, voting and video on demand. At present over 150 sites have been created and we’re always working on extra features.

We’ve made the platform as adaptable as possible so all the features can be turned on/off as required. As well as that the sites allow for private streaming via password access, embedding into any other website and ticketing for pay to view events.

The future of webcasting

Webcasting has now become over 50% of our business and we have 3 mobile teams that stream anything from Disney press junkets on Facebook, TEDx on YouTube and private meetings via our secure streaming platform.

Highlights so far include streaming  HM The Queen launching an Aircraft Carrier, webcasting Prof. Brian Cox Big Bang Live and broadcasting the cast of Captain America on Facebook Live to over 1 million viewers.

Our mobile streaming solution means we travel a lot – unbelievably it’s more cost effective for clients in New York, San Francisco and Sydney to fly us out rather than use local crew.

So for us we’ll continue embracing new technology (I think my tumble dryer is 4K ready) – so much so that we launched a new UK webcasting company in 2014 dedicated to streaming called eventstreaming.tv which just won Best UK webcasting company 2016, which is nice.

One tip if you’re starting your own business which it’s been covered in many books: it’s an all-encompassing 24 hour lifestyle. Find time to turn off (or divert) the phone, take the wife out (Hole in the Wall, Wilbraham) and watch Danger Mouse with the kids (new and original series).

Using cinemas as event spaces is becoming very popular and last month we filmed and streamed an event live showcasing new TV dramas from across the globe including a red carpet premiere broadcast of Taboo attended by Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott.

With over 15 WaveFX technicians on-site our brief was to provide all the technical AV support including lighting, sound, filming and live streaming across all 7 screens.

We utilised our two LiveStream HD550’s to vision mix simultaneous events and then streamed the HD broadcast to other screens around the venue. Using the in-house LAN network via our RTMP portable server we could relay any event to any of the 7 screens for audience overflow purposes.

One huge benefit in streaming locally via RTMP is there are no venue internet costs, we’ve experienced crazy prices in the past the most expensive being £7000 in Boston to access a 10mb internet connection. (we ended up using bonding our phones and using the 4G network).

The event was a great success and one the crew enjoyed enormously, mainly because they got to watch the latest movies and TV series to be released in 2017 and listen to cast, writers and producers.

New outside broadcast van for remote video production and webcasting

We’ve always had a van but now we have a VW California kitted out and ready for remote mobile editing, video production and webcasting. 

2016 has seen a steady increase in webcasting projects with more challenging locations and deadlines, our new outside broadcast van simply allows us to say “Yes” to clients who need a proactive video production or webcast service from locations where power or the internet just doesn’t exist.

Fast turnarounds for video projects are now the norm and the VW allows us to have mains electricity, a comfy seat and the coffee on. Coupled with a satellite solution we can now broadcast live from anywhere in the UK and Europe.

If we need to go further we can simply jump a plane with our LiveStream HD550 a very clever little box that allows us to live vision mix up to 5 cameras, PowerPoint and titles. The output can then be recorded or live streamed to any website including social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.

The Livestream HD550 packs down into a carry-on bag and used with our incredible small 4K Sony cameras we can deploy a webcasting team anywhere in the world without a team of Sherpas or Ryanairs baggage fine.

The big news is the VW has central heating which is a small separate diesel engine that keeps the van very snug and uses very little diesel, so perfect for late night editing. This might not sound like big news but once we nearly froze wearing gloves thumping at a keyboard cutting a video in production marquee as the temperature dropped to -3 (-23 when I tell it in a pub)

Our final job in 2016 is always the local school nativity to raise funds for the PTA and there is no better way to end a year than to film 90 seven year olds belting out “Little Donkey” (I think I may have seen Adrian weep a little).

2016 has seen webcasting become the norm at events and conferences rather than the bolt-on it once was, we’re also now regularly live streaming events purely for the internet that have no physical audience.

Facebook LIVE has taken the industry by storm, launched in March 2016 it now equates for over 50% of what we do. Facebook allows an event to reach a potentially huge audience as it’s very much a natural sharing platform with high user engagement.

Some stats (we always need more stats)

1. By 2019, online video will be responsible for four-fifths of global Internet traffic.
2. Video quality is the most important factor for 67% of viewers when watching a livestream broadcast.
3. 78% of online audiences are already watching video on Facebook Live. 90% think video quality is the most important aspect of Facebook Live videos.
